In the early days of the internet, if you wanted an internet presence, you had to get someone else to create the website because making a website was "highly specialized". This was usually done for a profit and in most cases it still is. Today, in the 21st century, it is much easier to design a website because of two reasons: first, the average computer user is more skilled at creating a basic file using the tasks of character typing, picture insertion, and file transfers. Second, software programs are much more sophisticated and intuitive (easier to use) to create a file. It is much easier to create your own website with little to no knowledge of html and other programming languages than it was just a couple years ago. Some websites have "online web site creation tools" where you can create a web page online. In most instances, this involves placing words and pictures into a template form and this limits your creative abilities. As of this writing, there is a new "open source" (Free) software program on the market that will enable you to create a very advanced website with literally no programming language experience required. It is called "Nvu" and can be downloaded from the Nvu website. The program comes in several different languages with English, Spanish, French, Catalan, and more, supported.
With a program like this now available, for free, it eliminates the need for someone to pay someone else to design their website. Designing a Website really is a combination or technical programming and creative input. Using a WYSIWYG editor will remove most, if not all of the technical programming requirements. Now all that is left is the creative input of the designer. We believe it is much better for someone to create their own website, especially non-businesses, as one wants the website to express the likes and feel of the owner as much as possible. We are not endorsing the product above (Nvu) but using it as an example as we feel that it is one of the easiest html editors around. It is much easier to create a webpage on your computer and then upload the files to your hosting account. It is also less expensive as the time spent connected to the internet is only for the file transfer, not for the site creation.
Tip: For beginning web developers, one of the first mistakes they make is in the naming of the page and files. Be sure to name the first file in the web "index.htm /.html / .php /.shtml etc. This is because of a web server requirement. The web server looks for this filename in the web root. The index.--- then links to the other files in the web. This process can be altered but is usually done only by an experienced web administrator. |
