Article #35 - How to create Photo Albums & Galleries?

Go!:

Anonymous users (non-registered) will very rarely be able to upload photos. If so, then the Photo Gallery administrator will probably review and approve the photos before they are seen by all. Registered Users have the capability to create a photo album and then to upload pictures to it. However, each dragonfly website may be configured differently and some websites may only grant certain Groups album creation and photo upload privileges. This depends on each individual website configuration. If you as a Registered User or Group Member are invited to share their photos with others within any online Dragonfly community, you may do so quite easily. To start with, you should have the pictures in digital form and sized appropriately. This tutorial will show you how to create a photo album and upload pictures to it.

To see a step by step screenshot tutorial on resizing photos, see this Transhost tutorial. It is easier than you think.

A quick note on why photo resizing is important: with the technical improvements in digital photography recently, it is now possible to take a picture that is over 2 mb in size. This is much too large to simply email to someone or to view within a photo album. It would take too long to transfer the photo by the internet. Also, since photos take up a lot of space on a web server, and this space costs extra, then it makes sense to not accept or store a photo on a web server that is larger than it can use effectively and efficiently. It is for this reason that larger photo files should be resized before uploading.

Each Dragonfly website may be configured differently regarding the maximum size of a file to be uploaded. When you upload a file, you will see the maximum upload size allowed. Make sure your picture is no larger than this.

For resizing photos, we recommend Irfanview. It is an extremely versatile graphics manipulation software. It is also very small to download, very easy to use, and is free.
